The Chelsea baseball team used a big first inning and some key defnesive plays to hold on to defeat Corunna 5-4 in the state quarterfinals at Howell Tuesday, June 13.
The Bulldogs advance to the Division 2 semifnals at Michigan State University Thursday June 15 where they will play Stevensville Lakeshore at 2:30 PM.
Corunna opened quickly with five straight hits, even though three of the hits did not even leave the infield. The five straight hits led to a pair of runs, but the Bulldogs got a double play and a ground out to get out of any further damage.
The high powered Chelsea offense got things going in the first. Cal Barrett ripped a two run double to tie the game at 2-2. After a hit batter, Hunter Lay hit a two run double too make it 4-2. Matt McDaniels laid down a squeeze bunt to make it 5-2 after one inning.
Things settled after that. Corunna put the lead off man three times, but Chelsea would turn two more double plays to get out of jams.
Chelsea would put a pair of runners on in the fourth anf fifth, but could not score.
Corunna would score a run in the 6th with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3 and scored on an error in the 7th, but Al Vasquez got the final batter to ground into a fielders choice at second and the Bulldogs charged the field for the celebration.
The Bulldogs will take a 31-9 record into Thursday’s semifinal game.
