The 2017/18 girls’ basketball opener saw two teams with different outlooks to the start of the season when Chelsea traveled to Saline Tuesday, November 28.
Chelsea returns the majority of its squad that won the Class B District title last season. The Hornets on the other hand, graduated most of its team and enters 2017 with a new starting five.
The Bulldogs experience showed as Chelsea built an early lead and held on for a 36-25 win.
Chelsea jumped out to a 10-4 lead and outscored the Hornets 9-8 in the second to lead 19-12 at the half.
Saline scored the first points of the second half to cut the lead to 19-14, but the Bulldogs would go on a 9-0 run to build a 28-14 lead.
The Hornets used a full court press to cut the Chelsea lead to seven, but the Bulldogs answered and led 30-21 after three.
The Bulldog defense clamped down in the fourth, holding the Hornets to just four points and sealing the win.
Riley Davis led the Bulldogs with nine points. Abby Fullerton and Jenna Fosdick each scored six for Chelsea. Maddie Vasquez chipped in with five, Briana Hay three, Katelyn McKinley, Helena Schultz, Anna Regis two each, and Jordan Holton one.
The Hornets were led by freshman Emma Stemmer with six points. Asia Lindsey and Nicole Sweetland scored five each, Erin Reilly three, while Brooke Bauer, Madeline Welch, and Liz Sekerak two apiece.
