The Chelsea girls’ cross country team had a strong start to its season at the Michigan Center Grass Relays last week.
The MC Relays is different than other cross country races as the teams divide up to four person squads and run a course in relay fashion.
The Bulldogs dived up into two teams and they came home with impressive first and third place finishes.
First place went to the team of Caroline Hirth (12:19), Sydney Matusik (12:26), Allison Hause (12:48), and Natalie Gofton (12:55).
Freshman Riley Thorburn ran the fastest time for Chelsea, leading the third place squad with a finish in 12:11. She teamed with Morgan Kurth (12:59), Jacqueline Taylor (13:32), and Mallory Bee (14:32).
In the JV race, top 10 finishes went to Sarah Kennings, a freshman, in fourth place in 13:39, and Zoe Steigerwald finished ninth in 14:23.
“We ran a good race for so early in the season,” coach Pat Clarke said. “We had six girls in the twelve minute range for the first time ever at this meet. Out of the eight girls who ran last year at this meet all eight bettered their times by a lot. It was a great way to start the season.”
