The Chelsea Board of Education unanimously approved to commemorate the varsity baseball field with Wayne R. Welton’s name on the scoreboard and an accompanying plaque to describe his accomplishments, during its regular meeting on November 27.
The naming comes after a process of following school board policy and procedure and many coming forth to speak highly of former baseball coach and athletic director, Wayne R. Welton.
During the board meeting, former baseball athletes spoke of how Mr. Welton was a positive influence in their lives, whether on or off the field.
“His message to do what’s right, surround yourself with good people and do the little things helped instill me a well backboned and work ethic that I still call upon today, twenty five years later,” said one former athlete during an emotional speech.
“We could go on and on about Wayne’s accomplishments and what he has done for the school district, the community of Chelsea and the state of Michigan,” said Board Secretary, Laura Bush. “When you sit at a baseball game and see his name, see the plaque, know his accomplishments and represent who we are, I think there isn’t anything better.”
