The Chelsea volleyball team overcame an injury and a controversial call to defeat Ida 3-1 in the Class B District Finals November 2.
Ida took the opening set 25-23, but it ended in strange fashion. The Blue Streaks led 24-20, but Chelsea rattled off three straight points to make it 24-23. The Bulldogs appeared to tie the game at 24 with a spike, but the referee blew the whistle and said she had stopped play due to an injured Ida player on the floor by the net.
The teams had to replay the point and Ida won it to take the set.
Chelsea bounced back to take the second set to take the set 25-20. The Bulldogs were looking strong in the third set when frontline player Marianna Carpenter went down with an ankle injury.
With Carpenter on the bench with ice on her ankle, sophomore Kiersten Anstead came in and gave the Bulldogs some quality play the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs would finish off the set 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead.
Chelsea jumped to a 12-8 lead in the fourth set, but Ida bounced back to retake the lead. The Bulldogs cut the lead to 20-19 and forced a Blue Streak timeout.
The Bulldogs blew past Ida and clinched it when Madeleine Kennedy spiked home a shot to end the final set 25-20.
Chelsea reached the final by easily defeating Tecumseh 25-13, 25-13, and 25-9 November 1.
The Bulldogs advance to this week’s Jonesville Regional. They took on Carleton Airport Tuesday and if they got by them, they would play in the Regional Finals against the winner of Livonia Ladywood and Onsted Thursday at 6pm.
