The Manchester Lady Dutch basketball team opened their 2017-18 campaign with a win over the Clinton Redskins on Tuesday, Nov. 28.

The Lady Dutch are looking to improve upon their second place finish in the Cascades conference last season, finishing 14-7 (11-3), behind only Grass Lake.

Traveling to Clinton High School in a non-conference matchup, they defeated the Redskins 72-34.

After a close first quarter Manchester led 13-10, that was the closest the Redskins would get for the rest of the evening.

The Lady Dutch used a 13-0 run early in the second quarter to pull away for good. Manchester outscored the Redskins 23-7 in the second quarter to take a 36-17 lead into halftime and never looked back.

Full court pressure coupled with an aggressive 1-3-1 zone allowed the Lady Dutch to force turnovers in the backcourt that led to easy baskets all night.

“We like to speed up the game, we don’t like to let teams get comfortable in their offense,” said Manchester head coach Corey Fether, who is entering his fifth year as head coach of the program. “We like to get them out of rhythm and out of sync. Our best offense is usually our defense.”

In addition to the defense, the offense was efficient from the field, putting up 72 points while shooting 50 percent inside the three point arc (26-52).

Juniors Avery Collins, Jayden Humphrey and Mackenzie Pietrzyk led the Lady Dutch, combining for 45 of their 72 points scored.

Collins led the team with 24 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Pietrzyk added 21 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Humphrey secured a double-double in the season opener with 10 points and 10 rebounds while adding two assists and four steals.

The Lady Dutch had a game scheduled for Friday against Dexter that was cancelled due to scheduling issues. Manchester athletic director Wes Gall said he hopes to reschedule the planned game later in the season against another team.

The Lady Dutch travel to Onsted on Tuesday Dec. 5 for a 7pm game, another non-conference matchup.
