For the first time in school history, the Saline field hockey team upended Ann Arbor Skyline, blanking the Eagles 3-0 at Hornet Stadium Sept. 9.
The squad boasted the only goal of the first half to mount the 1-0 lead. With only three minutes left until halftime, junior Emily Maloney put back a rebound shot after a slick passing combination between the Hornet midfielders and forwards.
Saline carried the 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Hornets then netted two more goals in the second half to finish off Skyline. Sophomore Bridget Skelly scored on a reverse hit off a penalty corner to lift Saline to the 2-0 advantage, and Maloney notched her second goal of the contest on another rebound shot.
The Hornet defense – led by junior goalkeeper Julia Bentley and defenders Kari Szalay, Audrey Morton, Sophie Goethals and Fiona Morcom – sealed the victory and preserved the shutout.
