Antiques & Vintage on the Boulevard

Editor’s note: In its May 15, 2024, edition, the Sun Times News included a special “Discover Tecumseh” section. It contains articles describing many of the businesses and community life in this charming town. We’re running the articles online and encourage you to add a trip to Tecumseh to your list of fun things to do this summer.

Antiques & Vintage on the Boulevard celebrates its 10th anniversary this year under the energetic ownership of Kate Van Theel. With a deep-rooted passion for vintage items, Van Theel has transformed her fondness for the old into a bustling hub for antique enthusiasts and casual shoppers alike.

Van Theel’s journey into the world of antiques began at 19, working at an antique mall in Parma. “I’ve always liked old things, you know. I think there are old souls in the world, and they’re drawn to this kind of stuff,” she explains, reflecting on her long-standing fascination with historical items. Her career path took a decisive turn when she chose to leave a conventional job to pursue her dream, marking a significant leap of faith.

Antiques & Vintage on the Boulevard stands out not just for its extensive collection of unique and eclectic items, brought together by Van Theel and 15 consigners, but also for its ability to blend traditional and contemporary decor. This blend has become increasingly crucial as trends shift away from classical home setups. “You have to appeal to different markets, different groups of people. So that’s where you get the home decor that comes in that goes well with vintage and antiques, kind of a blend,” Van Theel notes, emphasizing the store’s adaptive approach.

Beyond her store, Van Theel enjoys being part of Tecumseh’s vibrant local scene that includes kayaking, hidden gardens, and a variety of local breweries and wineries, making it a perfect destination for a weekend getaway. With the store’s upcoming anniversary, Van Theel is optimistic about the future despite the job’s physical demands, “I’m looking forward to another ten years,” she says.
