Avalon Housing and Faith in Action will be hosting an open house on Thursday June 14 from 3-5pm to celebrate the completed renovation of 533 North Main in Chelsea, the former Sharon Ann Apartments.

In 2017 Avalon Housing, Washtenaw County’s leading provider of supportive housing purchased the 17-unit apartment building through a subsidiary, Sharon Ann Apartments LDHA LP. Avalon is the property manager and developer.

Supportive housing is a combination of affordable housing and support services that helps people achieve housing stability and lead healthier, productive lives.

All units at 533 North Main will be kept affordable housing for households at or under 60% of Area Media Income, with five units designated as supportive housing. Avalon has been awarded project-based rent vouchers for all 17 units from the Jackson Housing Commission. Through these vouchers, contract rents can be set at fair market rental rates while retaining affordability for low- and extremely low-income households, who pay 30% of their income as tenant rent. All 17 units are now fully occupied.

Faith in Action, the leading social service agency in Chelsea, provides support services to residents. Like Avalon, Faith in Action is a member agency of the Washtenaw Housing Alliance, which has played an active role in Washtenaw County’s Plan to End Homelessness.

533 North Main is adjacent to Chelsea’s downtown, with access to banks, retail and other community amenities. The site is near shopping, schools, and a state-of-the-art hospital. The 533 North Main complex includes a community room that will provide programs and activities designed to help tenants connect with their neighbors and with community- and skill-building services.

“During the past year we’ve been honored to work alongside Faith in Action to provide supportive, affordable housing in Chelsea throughout the renovation of this site,” said Aubrey Patiño, Avalon’s Executive Director. “We are grateful to all our partners in this process. We look forward to celebrating the grand opening of 533 North Main with our partners, residents and neighbors.”
