An undefeated season and a #1 Regional seed was in reach and the Chelsea football team made sure they completed at least one of the two as they defeated Ann Arbor Skyline 38-14 October 25 to improve the 9-0 regular season.
While the undefeated regular season is locked up, it remains to be seen if the #1 seed and a possible three home games in the state playoffs until the MHSAA state playoff brackets are announced Sunday night.
As they were in 2018, the Bulldogs are borderline between Division 3 and D4 and it is unknown which they will be placed in.
The Skyline game saw the Eagles take an early 7-0 lead with a 50 yard TD pass at 7:14 of the first quarter.
It was all Bulldogs from there as the defense slammed the door on Skyline.
Brennan Van Riper scored the first of his three touchdowns from nine yards out to tie the game at 7-7 with just over three minutes left in the first and Mitch Reynolds sprinted in from 20 yards out to make it 14-7 after one quarter.
Van Riper scored his second of the game from four yards out and Riley Sumner booted a 27 yard field goal in the final minute to make it 24-7 at the half.
The Bulldogs blew it open in the second half when Van Riper scored from five yards out and Logan Vaughn returned an interception for 40 yards to make it 38-7.
Skyline would add a late score to make the final 38-14.
Van Riper finished with 106 yards rushing on 16 carries and three scores, while Cole Munson rushed for 66 yards on six carries. Reynolds added 52 yards on six carries and a score.
Griffen Murphy was 12 of 22 passing for 132 yards. Joe Taylor caught two passes for 52 yards and Ross Stofflet three for 28, and Reynold for 21.
Sam Michael and Gabe Vowels were in on four tackles each to lead the defense that held Skyline to 227 yards in total offense.
