CAHS Matching Donation Campaign 2019

Thanks to the on-going support of many in the community, 2018 proved to be a landmark year for the Chelsea Area Historical Society (CAHS).  In addition to many programs focused on Chelsea’s rich history, they have welcomed a number of important new pieces to their collections and have been more active than ever in the Chelsea community.

Perhaps most exciting was the success of the first half of the “Match to Burn the Mortgage” campaign.  Since CAHS was able to raise $25,000 in donations from local supporters, they met the challenge match and went from a $120,000 Land Contract to a traditional mortgage of $50,000 – a huge burden was off of their backs and the monthly payments are 1/3 of the previous amount.  Their generous anonymous donor has agreed to the second half of the Match Campaign – they will donate another $25,000 in 2019 if /when CAHS matches it by raising another $25,000.  So when CAHS does this, their mortgage will be paid off entirely, meaning a debt-free CAHS and the long-term viability of the society

Also, the donor has agreed to allow CAHS to start raising funds towards the 2019 match December 1 of this year.  So, when considering year-end donations this month, please consider a donation to CAHS and have your generosity doubled.  They will of course provide the appropriate written confirmation for you to use as a fully tax-deductible contribution on this year’s taxes. Donations can be mailed to “Chelsea Area Historical Society” at 128 Jackson Street, Chelsea, 48118; or can be made on-line at their website (

In addition to looking forward to “Burning the Mortgage” in 2019, they already have a number of presentations lined-up to further share Chelsea’s history, and they have a couple of significant physical improvements they will be announcing in the coming year. If you haven’t visited the Museum recently, please come and see all the CAHS community has accomplished.  The museum is open from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturdays & Sundays.  To contact them call 734-476-2010 or via e-mail to
