Coming off a season which saw the Bulldogs reach the Division 2 State Semifinals, the Chelsea baseball team opened 2018 with a 3-2 win over Allen Park Wednesday in a game played at Eastern Michigan University.
Though the Bulldogs lost several key seniors, they still have a strong squad returning and a group of underclassmen that hope for a repeat of last season, if not more.
Things started slowly for Chelsea as Allen Park took a 1-0 lead in the second with an unearned run.
The lead grew to 2-0 in the third when Allen Park executed a double steal.
The Bulldogs got one back in the fourth when Hunter Neff led off with a double and Thomas Steele beat out a bunt single to put runners at the corners. After a foul out the Bulldogs pulled off a double steal of their own as Neff scored to make it 2-1.
Aaron McDaniels then ripped a single to left to score Steele and make it 2-2 after four.
It stayed that way until the sixth when Lay reached on a two-out single. Pinch-hitter Garrett Steele then ripped a double to right to score Lay and give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
Allen Park had a runner reach on a walk in the seventh, but Hunter Neff struck out the final two batters for the save and the Chelsea win.
Five Bulldog pitchers combined to allow just two hits and strike out seven.
Chelsea outhit Allen Park 8-3 with eight different Bulldogs collecting hits.
The Bulldogs are now off until they return from their spring training trip to Florida.
