The Chelsea boys’ cross country team had high hopes and lofty goals for the 2017 season. None were any higher than a Division 2 State Title and the Bulldogs finished off their list of goals by claiming the State Championship at Michigan International Speedway Saturday, November 4.
The Bulldogs entered the finals ranked number one in the state in Division 2 and their previous best finish at state was a fourth place finish in 2008.
Their biggest competitors looked to be defending champion Corunna and a strong Lansing Catholic Central team that had beat the Bulldogs earlier in the season at the Portage Invitational. Both squads had spent time in the number one spot that Chelsea held on to.
The Bulldogs had three runners finish in the top 30 overall standings to earn All State Honors and lead the Bulldogs to the title.
All five scoring Bulldogs finished in the top 40 of the team standings to help claim the title.
Chelsea finished with 96 points, just beating out Corunna with 110 and Lansing Catholic with 165.
Tom Oates came home fifth in a time of 15:39 to lead the charge for the Bulldogs.
Jensen Holm ran a personal best of 15:51 to finish 11th overall and Carson Rabbitt was 26th in 16:12 to earn All State honors for the Bulldogs.
Connor Gilbreath ran a personal best time of 16:29 to finish 42nd, while Foster Thorburn was 59th in 16:41 to round out the top five. Will Scott finished 87th in 16:59, and Jeremy Northrop 228th in 18:46.
