The Chelsea boys’ cross country team got a view of what it is going to take to make it a three-peat as state champions at the Portage Invitational October 5.
The Bulldogs ran against several of the Division 2 top 10 teams in the state and came home with a third-place finish.
Fremont and Otsego entered the race as the top two ranked teams in Division 2 and finished 1st and 2nd. The Bulldogs beat out several other ranked teams to earn the 3rd spot, including 3rd ranked Grand Rapids Christian.
“Fremont and Otsego are the clear favorites for the state championship this year, but for us to beat a host of other ranked schools is a shot in the arm for our team,” Coach Eric Swager said.
The Bulldogs top four runners all set personal records and three earned medals.
Earning medals for Chelsea were Will Scott with a 10th place finish and a PR of 16:03; Joseph Norwood 16th and a PR of 16:10, and Zander Hartsuff 30th and a PR of 16:33.
Erik Reiber finished 37th with a PR of 16:44, Jimmy Alford 66th in 17:20, Will Fredenberg 69th in 17:23, and Caden Faupel 132nd in 18:02.
“To earn a third-place trophy out of 47 teams is a great accomplishment,” Swager said.
