The Chelsea boys’ track and field team took a small squad to the season opening EMU Relays and came home with a third place finish Friday, March 22.

The event saw 40 teams compete so the points were spread out. The Bulldogs finished with 29 points, one point behind Detroit Renaissance with 30 and Dexter with 41.

Chelsea was led by a strong distance team, with the distance medley relay team of Carson Rabbit, Colton Trevino, Will Scott, andFoster Thorburn took first place.

Jensen Holm was second in the 1600 and teamed with Rabbitt, Thorburn, and Joseph Norwood to finished 2nd in the 4×800. The 2019 squad has 63 members with 36 of them competing in high school track for the first time.

The Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them to keep their streak of six straight regional titles intact.

“Individually, we hope to rely heavily on our upperclassmen distance runners:   Carson Rabbitt, Foster Thorburn, Will Scott, Joseph Norwood, and Zander Hartsuff are all juniors or seniors who were part of last fall’s State Championship Cross Country Squad,” Coach Eric Swager said. “Senior sprinter Colton Trevino worked hard all winter and appears to be ready to lead a young sprint/hurdle squad.   Anthony Pearce and Zach Sanborn return to anchor a similarly inexperienced squad of throwers. As we go along, I am confident that many underclassmen will rise to the surface to snatch up these opportunities.”
