The Chelsea boys’ cross country team continues to show why they are the defending Division 2 state champions and still ranked number one in the state after winning the Portage Invitational rather easily Saturday.
The meet featured 11 of the top 15 teams in the Division 2 rankings according to michigancrosscountry.com and the Bulldogs won going away by 40 points.
Chelsea finished with 144 points, beating out Fremont with 184 and Otsego 196. This is with missing one of their top runners and a couple of the Bulldogs under the weather.
The race featured 46 teams and 317 runners.
Carson Rabbitt led the Bulldogs with a seventh-place finish in 16:04, followed by Foster Thorburn 13th in 16:18.
Will Scott was 22nd in 16:46, Zander Hartsuff 47th in 17:02, Joseph Norwood 55th in 17:10, Shaun Happy 102nd in 17:54, and Jimmy Alford 173rd in 18:31.
“This is an outstanding result for the Chelsea XC team,” coach Eric Swager said. “This is THE premier regular season meet in the state, and we took top honors out of 46 teams from Michigan and Ohio. We have never won this before, so it really is a program-defining moment.”
