The city of Chelsea voted to amend the contract of City Manager John Hanifan from 2021 to 2023.
Hanifan was hired in 2007 under then Mayor Ann Feeney. A recent evaluation of Hanifan during a closed session was positive according to Mayor Melissa Johnson at the Nov. 4 city council meeting.
Johnson also noted the number of large projects that will be coming down the pipeline in the next few years and cited Hanifan’s expertise as a welcome help.
Councilmember Jane Pacheco asked if there was a uniformity to the contract extensions and Mayor Melissa Johnson stated that it had varied to this point and her recommendation was for two years.
“It started with a seven-year contract, went to a three-year extension, and then a three-year extension before this one,” said Johnson.
Hanifan reported that three-year contracts were typical for the position and this contract extension puts it right around that mark.
“It’s been an honor and pleasure to serve the good people of Chelsea,” said Hanifan. “I look forward to doing that for a long time.”
