Injuries to its top two runners hurt the Chelsea girls’ cross country team as the Bulldogs came up just short of a state finals bid with a fourth place finish at the D2 Regional and Lake Erie MetroPark Saturday, October 27.
The Bulldogs finished just out a state qualifying third place spot with 188 points, just three points behind Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard with 115. SEC White rival Tecumseh won the title with 44 points.
“We had our top two runners have ankle injuries which slowed them down considerably,” Coach Pat Clarke said. “In spite of the injuries the rest of the girls persevered and just missed qualifying for states by 3 points. I was exremely pleased with their efforts!”
Audra Guthre led the Bulldogs with a 19th place finish in 20:59 followed by Kate Gaiser 20th in 21:00.
Emily Chizek was 21st in 21:07, Riley Thorburn 26th in 21:15, Julia Kause 37th with a PR of 21:44, Brooke Matusik 43rd in 21:56, and Natalie Davies 48th in 22:14.
“This group of girls has worked very hard all season. They have bonded together to become a good team,” Clarke said. “They have had ups and downs throughout the season, but they continue improve and believe in themselves. I am extremely proud of these girls and their efforts.”
