Chelsea Girls Pull Away From Adrian

The Chelsea girls’ basketball team pulled away from a scrappy Adrian squad to improve to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in the SEC White after a 65-50 win Tuesday, January 8.

Both teams started slow in the first quarter with Chelsea taking an 8-4 lead after one.

The offenses came to life in the second as Chelsea outscored the Maples 21-16 to take a 29-20 halftime lead. The Bulldogs built a seven point lead in the quarter, but the Maples rattled off eight straight points to take the lead. With two minutes left in the half Adrian led 20-19, but Chelsea closed the half on a 10-0 run to take the nine point lead in to the break.

The Bulldogs full court press forced several Maple turnovers in the third as Chelsea began to slowly pull away. AJ Fullerton sank a pair of free throws and made a steal and lay-in at the buzzer to make it 43-31 after three.

Chelsea put the game away in the fourth behind the hot shooting of Helena Schultz, who scored 11 points in the final quarter and finished with a team high 18 points.

Adrian’s Caroline Lewis tried to keep the Males in the game by scoring 14 in the fourth and finishing with a game high 25 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs finished off the 15 points win.

Fullerton and Maddie Vasquez scored 13 points each for Chelsea. Riley Davis, Madeleine Kennedy, and Kiersten Anstead scored four points each, while Briana Hay, Jenna Fosdick, Emily McCalla, and Jessica Emmert each scored two for the Bulldogs.

Chelsea will travel to Ypsilanti Friday night for a SEC White showdown with the Grizzlies at 7:00.
