The Chelsea girls’ tennis team was finally able to kick off its season this week and the Bulldogs opened with a pair of wins.
Chelsea started with an impressive 6-2 win over Mason Wednesday, April 11. The Bulldogs picked up four easy wins but still had to get one more win out of four close matches to pull out the victory.
They dropped the first two at one singles and two doubles, but Kendall Tucker and Morgan Moore teamed for a three-set win at one doubles and newcomer Kyra VanBatavia also came away with a three-set win at two singles to give the Bulldogs the victory.
Tucker and Moore split their first two sets at one doubles but pulled out a 6-3 win in the deciding third set to earn the 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 win. “I was really proud of the way they battled back after dropping a very close second set,” Coach Matt Pedlow said. “We talked in between sets and they were determined to play smarter and finish points quicker.”
VanBatavia won 7-6, 2-6, 7-5. “It’s rare you see a match this close while seeing someone lose a set 6-2, but Kyra fought back to get the win,” said Pedlow. “All of the momentum was with her opponent, but Kyra wouldn’t let her string together more than two games in a row and was able to win a close third set. It was a nice victory in her first Chelsea varsity match as she moved here at the beginning of the year from Minnesota.”
Also winning for Chelsea were Emma Cantina at three singles, Carli Martin at four singles, Madilynn O’Hara/Corrine Dale at three doubles, and Remy Sturt/Madisen Chinavare at four doubles.
On Thursday, The Bulldogs swept Adrian 8-0 to open SEC White play.
Picking up their first ever varsity wins were freshman Rachel Bareis at four singles (6-0, 6-0) and Sierra Martinez-Kratz who partnered with Remy Sturt at four doubles.
