It was another stella performance for the Chelsea girls’ tennis team when the Bulldogs came home with a third-place finish at the D3 state finals in Kalamazoo this weekend.
The Bulldogs were near the top of the standings for most of the tournament and finished with 24 points to beat out Bloomfield Hills Marian with 23. Detroit Country Day won the title with 33 points and Cranbrook-Kingswood was second with 29.
Sophomore Samantha Bieber led the charge for the Bulldogs by winning the state title and #2 singles. Bieber was unseeded in the bracket, but went 4-0 for the tournament, which included wins over the first, second, and third seeds.
The Bulldogs came away with a pair of state runners-up in doubles and both lost three set tiebreakers in the finals.
Meghan Bareis and Hayley Hopkins finished second at one-doubles wit ha 3-1 record. They defeated the #2 seed from Cranbrook-Kingswood before falling to the top-seed from Detroit Country Day 6-4, 1-6, 1-6.
The Taylor twins, Brenna and Lucy finished second at two doubles with a 3-1 record. They rolled through their first three opponents before falling in a three set finals match 3-6, 7-6 (5), 2-6.
The Bulldogs other two doubles teams reached the semifinals before bowing out.
Ellie Kuck and Libby Timberlake went 2-1 for the tournament at three doubles.
Also finishing 2-1 was the doubles team of Sage Gabriel-Menegay and Brooklyn Angel at four doubles.
Anne-Marie Begola picked up one win at one singles, while Josie Jackson went 1-1 on the day and Cyprus Gabriel-Menegay also went 1-1 for the tournament.
