Chelsea Girls Water Polo Fifth at MWPA State Finals

The Chelsea girls water polo team came away with its best finish in team history this weekend after finishing fifth at the MWPA state finals at the University of Michigan Friday and Saturday.

A year after qualifying for the finals for the first time and finishing eighth, the Bulldogs did some damage this year and finished 2-1 for the tournament and came away with the fifth-place finish.

Chelsea opened against eventual state champion Rockford and fell to the powerful Rams 13-3.

Kiera Crawley, Keygan Monahan, and Gabriella Burgess scored goals for the Bulldogs, with Monahan recording an assist.

Chelsea bounced back with its first win in state tournament history with a 4-2 win over East Grand Rapids.

It was a defensive battle with EGR taking a 1-0 lead in the first.

Chelsea got goals from Tallulah Gorby and Burgess to tie the game at 2-2 at the half.

Burgess scored her second of the game and Monahan found the net and the Bulldogs built a 4-2 lead and the stifling Bulldogs defense and goalkeeper Sydney Barston kept EGR off the board and held on for the 4-2 win.

Isabelle Tuell recorded two assists, while Gabi Rudolph had one for the Bulldogs.

Chelsea then took down Birmingham Seaholm 8-4 to finish in fifth-place.

Monahan led the team with four goals, while Tuell, Rudolph, Crawley and Burgess had one each. Rudolph and Gorby had two assists each, while Tuell, Crawly, and Burgess had one each. Barston made six saves in net for the Bulldogs.
