The Chelsea girls’ water polo team qualified for the MWPA State Finals for the second straight season after going 2-1 at the Grand Blanc regional this weekend.
The Bulldogs will take part in the state final tournament at the University of Michigan Friday May 31 and Saturday June 1.
Chelsea entered the regional as the third seed and knocked off the second seed host Grand Blanc 10-8 in the quarterfinals to guarantee a spot in the state finals.
The Bulldogs used a fast start to take a 4-0 lead after one period with a pair of goals from Keygan Monahan.
Monahan scored her third of the game and Tallulah Gorby found the net to keep the Bulldogs up four, 6-2 at halftime.
Chelsea pushed the lead to five in the third with two more goals from Monahan and a goal from Kiera Crawley for a 9-4 lead after three and held off a late rally by Grand Blanc final period to pull out the 10-8 win.
Monahan finished with six goals and one assist to lead the Bulldogs.
Gorby picked up two goals and two assists, while Crawley and Gabi Rudolph scored one each. Sydney Barston made nine saves in net for Chelsea.
The Bulldogs then faced the states top ranked team Ann Arbor Skyline and came up short in a 13-4 loss to the Eagles.
Skyline jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one and pushed the lead to 7-2 in the second and cruised in the second half.
Monahan scored a pair of goals to lead Chelsea, while Gorby and Rudolph scored one each. Gabriella Burgess collected two assists, while Brooke Paddock and Monahan had one each.
Chelsea bounced back to beat Walled Lake 5-3 in the third-place game.
It was a defensive battle with the game tied at 1-1 after a period and 3-2 at the half. Neither team scored in the third to keep it 3-2 and the Bulldogs would hold them off in the fourth to pull out the 5-3 win.
Gorby led Chelsea with two goals and one assist. Rudolph had a goal and two assists, Monahan a goal and assist, and Burgess one goal.
Barston was stellar in net, stopping 13 of 16 shots she faced for the win.
