The Chelsea Board of Education elected officers and swore in its two newly elected members, Jason Eyster and Keri Poulter, during their first board meeting of 2019 on Jan. 14.

In addition to Eyster and Poulter taking the Oath of Office, Shawn Quilter was nominated and elected as board president, Kristin van Reesema was nominated and elected as vice president, and Laura Bush was nominated and elected as secretary.

van Reesema will also take on the role of treasurer as well. Quilter told the board with some of the overlapping responsibilities of the vice president and treasurer, and after talking to van Reesema about the decision, that he wanted to recommend van Reesema for the treasurer position.

January is also Board Appreciation Month, Superintendent Julie Helber said that there will be more to come this month. On Jan. 14, behind the assembled board at the Washtenaw Street Education Center was a “Thank You” signed from the preschool program. Goodie bags were also at each board members seat before the meeting started and a short video was put
together with the question, “What’s a school board?”, answered by students in the district.
