On Nov. 26 at the Chelsea City Council meeting, council decided to set a date for a work session regarding the passing of Proposal 1 on Nov. 6.

Proposal 1 authorized and legalized possession, use and cultivation of recreational marijuana products by individuals who are at least 21 years of age and older, and commercial sales of recreational marijuana through state-licensed retailers.

Municipalities were authorized to ban or limit marijuana establishments within their boundaries and many have begun making their decisions.

With only one meeting in December due to the holidays, the council decided to hold a work session an hour before the city council meeting on Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. to talk about the decision.

Mayor Melissa Johnson told the council she had a paper with the legal analysis of the passing of proposal 1 and that she would share that with council before that meeting. She stated that with many cities studying the issue, it was important to be deliberate and to not do anything by default.
