The Chelsea soccer team used a stifling defense and some timely offense to defeat South Lyon East 3-0 in the Division 2 district semifinals at Parma Western Tuesday night.
While East carried a lot of the action, especially in the second half, the Bulldog defense kept the Cougars from getting many shots on goal against keeper Connor McKenzie. And when they were able to get a shot off McKenzie was there for the save.
Chelsea controlled the play early in the contest and earned a corner kick. Nathan Quintana lofted a nice kick toward the net that got over the goalkeeper that Will Barhite headed toward the net, but an East defender made a save on the goal line to keep the game scoreless.
The Bulldogs earned another corner and Chris White lifted another perfect kick toward the net and this time the header by Jordan Fansler beat the goaltender and two defenders to find the net to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead with 26:22 left in the half.
The teams would trade good chances late in the half, but both sent shots over the net to keep it 1-0 at the break.
East came out controlling the play early in the second half with a pair of direct kicks and a corner, but could not get a shot on net.
Their first shot of the half came on a partial breakaway, but McKenzie was there to make the easy save.
SLE continues to put the pressure on the Bulldogs, picking up two ore corners and another direct kick, but the Bulldogs defense played tough to keep them out of the net.
The Bulldogs bounced back quickly when Jacob Schultz picked up a loose ball in the box and drilled it home to give Chelsea a 2-0 lead with 17:01 left.
Chelsea took control from there and East started to lose its cool picking up a yellow card with six minutes left. Neither team was happy with some of the officiating calls during the game and it boiled over late.
The Bulldogs sealed the win when White hit a cutting Quintana with a throw-in that Quintana ricocheted off the keeper and into the net with 2:31 left in the game to make it 3-0.
Chelsea improves to 9-5-4 overall on the season. They advance to Thursday’s District final to play Parma Western (16-3) at 6:30 in Parma. The teams played in an early-season tournament game that Parma came out on top 3-2 back in August.
