Chelsea Softball Splits With Tecumseh in SEC Showdown

The SEC White softball showdown between two of the top teams in the conference was just that as Chelsea and Tecumseh split a doubleheader Monday with the Indians taking the wild opener 8-6 in eight innings and the Bulldogs bouncing back to take the second.

The opener was a pitcher duel for most of the game as the teams were scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth.

Chelsea went on top when Maddie Kemp ripped a single to score Maddie Vasquez for a 1-0 lead.

Tecumseh tied it in the fifth, but Chelsea retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on a bases loaded walk by Stephanie Dark and an RBI single by Maddy Scheese for a 3-1 lead.

Tecumseh rallied back in the seventh, scoring four times to take a 5-3 lead.

Vasquez was hit by a pitch and Peighton Root followed with a two-run shot to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

Tecumseh scored three times in the top of the 8th to take an 8-5 lead. The Bulldogs got one back in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI ground out to make it 8-6, but would get no closer.

Root had two hits and two RBI, including the home run to lead the offense. Allison Hale, Vasquez, and Sydnee Liedel had two hits each. Dark, Scheese, and Kemp had a hit and RBI each. Hale struck out six on the mound for the Bulldogs.

A big four-run fifth inning helped Chelse pull away for the 8-3 win in the nightcap.

Townsend had three hits and an RBI, while Vasquez had two hits and an RBI. Root added a hit and two RBI and Kemp a hit and RBI. Kemp earned the win on the mound striking out four.

Chelsea is now 11-1 in the SEC White. Lincoln is 8-1 and Tecumseh 11-2. Lincoln and Chelsea will face off at Ypsilanti May 20 in what could be for the SEC White title.
