The Chelsea wrestling team had three wrestlers qualify for the Division 2 State Finals at Ford Field in Detroit March 1st and 2nd.
The Bulldogs were led by 140 pound Regional champion Nick Matusko.
Matusko remained undefeated on the season with a 45-0 record. He recorded a first round pin in the quarterfinals and then dominated his semifinal match with a 17-3 major decision. The finals were a rematch of the district finals with Chad Haynes of Eaton Rapids and once again Matusko came out on top with a 5-2 win.
He will be one of four number one seeds in the 16 person bracket at the Finals in two weeks.
Shane Nold (34-14) finished fourth at 145 pounds to earn a spot in the state finals.
The junior opened with a 7-2 win, but then fell to the eventual regional champion in the semifinals. Nold bounced back with a 2-0 win in the consolation bracket to reach the third-place match and claim a spot in the state finals. The third-place match saw him drop a tough 3-2 decision and finish fourth. It will be his first trip to the finals.
Junior Josiah Fitch (40-12) finished 4th at 285 to earn a spot in the state finals for the first time.
Fitch opened with a 5-1 win in the quarterfinals before dropping a hard-fought 7-5 decision to eventual the Regional champ from Niles in the semis. He then qualified for the state finals by picking up a 6-1 win and moved to the third-place match where he fell 6-0 to finish fourth.
Daniel Golding (39-15) just missed qualifying for the final, falling in the consoaltion semis and going 1-2 on the day.
Freshman Cole Munson had a rough day but picked up valuable experience, dropping both of his matches and finishing the season 37-12 at 130 pounds.
The Bulldogs fell in the team regionals to fourth ranked DeWitt 59-17.
Chelsea will be a force to be reckoned with next season as they graduate just one senior and will return their whole starting line-up in 2019/2020.
