Chelsea Wrestling Wins District, Sends Five to Regionals

The Chelsea wrestling team had a big week as the Bulldogs claimed the Division 2 district title and had five wrestlers qualify for the individual regionals February 16.

The Bulldogs dominated the Pinckney match in the team semifinals February 6.

Chelsea picked up pins in 10 of 14 matches to down the Pirates 66-14 to move to the finals and face rival Dexter.

The Bulldogs benefitted from three Dexter voids and cruised to a 51-27 win to claim the district title and move on to the regional at Mason February 13.

Daniel Golding (189), Brandon de Gracia (119), Cole Munson (135), Nick Matusko (140), Shane Nold (145), and Mitch Reynolds (152) picked up two wins each for the Bulldogs.

Chelsea will face a strong DeWitt team that is ranked fourth in the state in the Regional semifinal. A win and the Bulldogs could face second-ranked Eaton Rapids or Mason for the Regional title.

The Bulldogs took part in the individual district at Mason Saturday and had five wrestlers move on to the Regional at Vickburg Saturday, February 16.

Matusko claimed the district title at 140 pounds to lead the Bulldogs. He went 3-0 on the day and improved his record to 39-0 on the season.

Josiah Fitch finished 2nd at 285. He won his first two matches before falling in the championship match.

Three other Bulldogs had third place finishes.

Munson went 3-1 on the day to finish third at 130 pounds. Nold lost his quarterfinal match at 145, but battled back for three straight wins to finish third and Golding went 4-1 at 189 to claim the third place spot.
