Last week the City of Chelsea adopted a proclamation to make June 17 – 23 Gun Safety Week.

Mayor Melissa Johnson brought forth the Gun Safety Proclamation recommendation to the city council during the June 18 meeting.

The proclamation states the City of Chelsea’s commitment to increase public safety and awareness about gun safety.  The Chelsea Police Department (CPD) provides free gun locks and gun safety information to members of the public, along with collaborating with community organizations to enhance public knowledge and promote gun safety.

Mayor Johnson presented Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth with the proclamation, who told council where gun safety locks could be located, and that he or any members of the CPD would be more than happy to have a conversation with anyone about gun safety.

Johnson said it was the first time she has been approached, as mayor, with a request to propose a proclamation. The city council will further discuss guidelines and the process for adopting proclamations at their next meeting as Chelsea City currently had none.
