Bitter rivals Dexter and Chelsea battled it out in the Division 2 girls’ soccer district championship Saturday and the game was decided in a shootout as Dexter defeated Chelsea 1-0 (3-1 PK).

The win gave the Dreadnaughts their third straight district title and they will advance to the Mason Regional where they will take on Marshall Tuesday at 5:00 PM.

The teams battled it out through a scoreless regulation and two scoreless ten-minute overtime periods to send the game into the shootout.

The teams each pick five players to take part in the shootout and they take turns with penalty kicks at the opponent’s goalie.

Both the Dreadnaughts and Bulldogs scored in round one with Sammi Corcoran scoring for Dexter.

Nicole Tuzinowski was a wall in net for the Dreads. She stopped the Bulldogs second shot and Kylie Cabana scored for Dexter to make it 2-1.

Tuzinowski then stopped the third Bulldogs shot and then stepped up to make a penalty kick herself to make it 3-1 Dreadnaughts.

She then stopped her third straight shot to clinch the title for Dexter.

The Dreadnaughts reached the finals by taking down South Lyon East 8-0 Thursday.

Emma Ripka led the Dreads with three goals, while Corcoran added two. Claire Ketzner, Remy Crawford, and Skylar Vanstrian each scored one.
