Mill Creek Middle School students know their music; enough so that some of them achieved all-state honors.
To recognize the success of the music program, the Dexter Community Schools Board of Education, at its Feb. 11 meeting, recognized the students for solo and ensemble performances and honored those who received All-State for band and orchestra.
In introducing the students, Andy Damman, director of bands for Mill Creek Middle School, said they were celebrating Mill Creek’s performance at the solo and ensemble festival earlier this month, which he said Mill Creek did an excellent job, and acknowledging the all-state students.
All-state has students from around Michigan auditioning for a spot.
Also at the school board meeting was Alison Campbell, Mill Creek orchestra teacher, who said, “All of our students that went to S and E medaled…We’re very proud of them.”
The school board honored the all-state students with certificates.
The all-state band honorees are Peter Fifelski, Griffin Patel, Hanne Neilsen, Yuma Tsubouchi and for orchestra it is Bethany Simons and Evelyn Clemens.
To be selected all-state, Damman said students participate in blind auditions in early November and are selected by a committee who listens to the auditions.
He said students who attended the solo and ensemble festival can receive a medal for a superior performance.
“This year we had an exceptional turnout of events that medaled,” Damman said of solo and ensemble festival.
“Both All State participation and medaling at solo and ensemble are very high achievements,” Damman and Campbell said. “Dexter has had a long history of success in both of these events.”
