Survive and advance. Once it comes to state tournaments in any high school sport, it doesn’t matter how good you look doing it, all that matters is the final score.
The Dexter soccer team showed that Tuesday with a 1-0 overtime win over South Lyon East in the D2 district opener October 16.
Dexter entered the match with a 16-2-3 overall record and ranked 10th in the state and East had just three wins on the season, but the game was a battle throughout.
East was a physical team that gave the Dreadnaughts fits.
The game was scoreless through regulation setting up two 10 minute overtime periods.
Two minutes into the first overtime, the Dreadnaughts finally broke through as Sam Harshe found the net to give Dexter a 1-0 lead that they held on to for the remainder of the first overtime and the second 10 minutes period.
Dexter freshman Wiley Smith earned the shutout in net for the Dreads.
The Dreadnaughts advance to Thursday’s semifinals where they will face host Mason at 5:00 PM, a 2-0 winner over Pinckney.
