After being one of the stronger teams in the state in Division 2 for many years, the Dexter men’s soccer team took a step up in competition this season as the Dreadnaughts moved up to Division 1 for the first time as they opened district action with a 5-3 win over Belleville October 10.
It will not take long for the Dreadnaughts to see what it takes to compete in Division 1 as they are competing in one of the toughest districts in the state with state-ranked Saline and defending D1 champion Ann Arbor Skyline among the teams in the district.
Dexter entered the tournament with a 12-1-6 overall record with two of the ties coming against Saline and a strong Ann Arbor Pioneer team that is also in the district.
Against Belleville, the Dreadnaughts offense was clicking on all cylinders putting five goals on the board, but the defense struggled for the first time giving up a season-high three goals in the game.
Hayden Newton and Noah Lewis scored two goals each to lead the Dreads offense against the Tigers.
Nick Williamson scored the other goal for Dexter with Lewis and Juan Morales-Leverett picking up assists.
Dexter is hosting the district. The semifinals will be played Wednesday, October 16 with Skyline and Pioneer facing off at 5:30 and the Dreadnaughts taking on Saline at 7:15 at Al Ritt Stadium.
