A late second half goal and goal in overtime helped the Dexter girls’ soccer team rally past Pinckney in the Division 2 district semifinals Wednesday.
The win advances the Dreadnaughts to the district finals in Chelsea Saturday at noon against a red-hot Adrian Maples team.
The Maples ousted Chelsea 3-2 Tuesday night for the Maples to win their 11th straight game and are 13-0-2 over their last 15 games.
The Dexter game against Pinckney was scheduled for Tuesday night, but thunderstorms blew through the area and pushed the start time of the opening game back and forced Dexter and Pinckney back to Chelsea on Wednesday.
It was the Pirates that struck first, and it stayed 1-0 until just over midway in the second half.
With just under 15 minutes left the Dreads moved in on the Pinckney goal and Laci Jernigan took a pass inside the box. Jernigan moved to her left and made an amazing no-look backwards pass to a wide-open Kendall Cabana who drilled it home to tie the game at 1-1.
The score would remain tied, and the teams would go into two overtime periods.
Dexter struck in the first overtime when the Pirates were called for a penalty in the box. Brynn Fitch stepped to the line for a penalty kick and drilled it home to put the Dreadnaughts up 2-1 with 2:59 left in the first overtime period.
The Dreads were able to hold off Pinckney over the game’s final 13 minutes and advanced to the finals.
The win improved the Dreadnaughts to 8-8-2 overall on the season.
