Three home runs helped the Dexter softball team overcome a three-run deficit as the Dreadnaughts rallied past Brighton 7-4 in the Class A District opener in Howell Tuesday.
Dexter took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on back to back triple by Jenna Wagenschutz and Kylee Niswonger.
Brighton loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, but Sam Sutton got out of the jam with a strikeout.
It stayed 1-0 until the fifth when the Bulldogs first five batters reached base and scored four times in the inning to take a 4-1 lead.
In the sixth, Niswonger opened with a single and Livvy Mellifont walked, setting up Alexis Haley, who ripped a home run to left field to tie the game at 4-4.
The score remained tied until the seventh when Maddy Stroia led off with a deep home run to center field to give the Dreads a 5-4 lead. One batter later Wagenschutz launched one out to left to make it 6-4.
The Dreadnaughts would add one more on an RBI single by Haley for a 7-4 lead.
Sutton set the Bulldogs down in order in the seventh to move the Dreadnaughts on to the semifinals Saturday against Ann Arbor Skyline at 10:00 AM in Howell.
Wagenschutz finished with three hits and an RBI to lead the offense. Haley had two hits and four RBI, while Niswonger had two hits and an RBI. Stroia had a home run, Mellifont had a hit and two runs scored, and Emma Sortor a hit.
Sutton struck out five and allowed eight hits for the win on the mound.
