Dexter Softball Splits With Tecumseh

The Dexter softball team stayed near the top of the SEC White standings after a split with Tecumseh last week.

The Dreadnaughts took the opener 5-3 behind the pitching of Sam Sutton. Sutton struck out three and allowed nine hits on the mound for the win.

Dexter took a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles by Sutton and Alexis Haley. They made it 4-0 in the fourth when Kaylee Niswonger stole a double to home.



Tecumseh scored three in the sixth to make it 4-3, but Niswonger led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple and scored on a groundout by Kristy Maitland for a 5-3 lead.

The Indians put two runners on in the seventh, but Sutton got a line out and a groundout to end the game.

Niswonger led the offense with two hits and two runs scored. Sutton, Haley, and Maitland each had a hit and RBI.

The Dreads dropped the second game 18-7 as Tecumseh pounded out 21 hits.

Niswonger finished with three hits, three runs scored, and one RBI. Emily Lance smacked a home run and finished with two hits and two RBI.

Dexter swept a pair of games from Ann Arbor Pioneer in an SEC crossover taking the opener 13-1 and the second 6-0. The Dreads took advantage of eight Pioneer walks in the opener.

Maitland and Lillie Robeson each had a hit and two RBI, while Jenna Wagenschutz and Haley each had two hits and three runs scored. Sutton and Lance each had a hit and RBI.

Sutton earned the win on the mound, striking out 11.

Maddy Stroia struck out six in the second game and Taylor Wilson finished on the mound as they combined to blank Pioneer in the second game.

Livvy Mellifont had a huge game with a home run and finished with four hits, three RBI, and three runs scored. Stroia added a home run, Haley two hits and an RBI, and Niswonger two hits.

The Dreads took two of three at the Salem Invite Saturday. Dexter defeated Rochester 5-2 and Huron 8-6 but fell to Salem 2-1.

Three runs in the first inning gave the Dreads an early lead against Rochester. They scored twice more in the third to make it 5-0 and held on for the win.

Mellifont smacked a home run and finished with two hits and two RBI to lead the offense. Sutton added two hits and an RBI, while Niswonger had two hits and scored a run. Robeson and Maitland each had a hit and RBI.

Stroia struck out five for the win on the mound.

Salem scored two runs in the third and held the Dreadnaughts hitless until the seventh. Haley led off the seventh with a double and scored when she stole home after a single by Sutton, but Dexter could not get the tying run across.

The third game saw Huron score two in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead, but Dexter scored three in the bottom of the inning with the game-winner coming on a two-run single by Lance.

Lance led the offense with two hits and four RBI, while Emma Sortor and Haley each had two hits and one run scored. Niswonger, Wagenschutz, and Mack Gordon each had a hit and RBI. Brenna Cassidy struck out four for the win.
