Dexter Takes Down Pioneer 5-3

The Dexter baseball team bounced back from its first loss of the season to take down Ann Arbor Pioneer 5-3 Thursday.

Pioneer took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Dreadnaughts answered with a Trevor Feeman sacrifice fly to plate Jacoby Haley to tied it at one.

After Pioneer retook the lead 2-1 in the third the Dreads answered with three runs for a 4-2 lead. The big blow of the inning was a 2-run double by David Kreske and Haley followed with an RBI single.

Pioneer cut the lead to 4-3 in the 5th, but Kevin DeVoogd drove in Reed Ladd with an RBI single to make it 5-3 after five.

Austin Bockrath came in to pitch in relief and struck out four over the final two innings to slam the door on Pioneer and earn the save.

Haley and DeVoogd finished with two hits and an RBI each, while Kreske had the two-run double. Nate Kniesteadt and Andy Durand each had a hit and run scored.

DeVoogd earned the win on the mound, striking out three in three innings of work in relief.

The Dreadnaughts improved to 5-1 overall on the season. They take on rival Chelsea in a key early-season SEC series next week. They host the Bulldogs in a doubleheader Monday and travel to Chelsea Wednesday.
