Chelsea, Michigan

Passed away at age 84, Saturday, April 21, 2018 at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital. He was born October 15, 1933 in McGuffey, Ohio the son of William and Maude (Minix) O’Dell.


Don lived in Chelsea his entire life. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War and remained active as a life member of the American Legion Herbert J. McKune Post 31, also serving as Post Commander.

If you’ve ever noticed the American flags marking the Veteran’s graves at the local cemeteries, Don was the one who ensured that every Veteran was honored with a flag marker. He participated in countless parades and was honored in 2006 as Chelsea Citizen of the Year.

He worked as a driver/mechanic for Chrysler Proving Grounds for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He also worked part time for Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home.

He had a cottage north of Manistee where he enjoyed deer hunting. He also enjoyed golfing and was a life member of the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club as well as the Masonic Lodge # 156.

On May 13, 1962 he married Margaret M. Stapish, and she survives. Also surviving are one sister Joanne Moore of Chelsea, nieces and nephews: Mike Moore, William Moore, Karen Moore, Maria Stapish, Thomas Pawlowski, and Sherri Nadeau.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Robert Moore, and sister-in-law Helen Stapish. Funeral services will take place Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 1pm from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea with Rev. Kathy Schell officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. Also on Wednesday from noon until the hour of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Herbert J. McKune Post 31 or Faith in Action.
