Yoga And Your Pelvic Floor: A Workshop for Women

A healthy pelvic floor is crucial for optimum functioning of the body. Problems that are related to the health of the pelvic floor can include: pelvic pain, sexual pain, incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. We will address questions such as:
Where exactly are the pelvic floor muscles?
What do I use them for everyday?
Why is it important for me to know?
How can a yoga practice promote healthy functioning of the pelvic floor?
The workshop will cover the anatomy, structure, and function of the pelvic floor using different models and images to understand its relation to everyday actions and basic yoga postures. We will learn how to effectively engage and release the pelvic floor, and we will practice activation and relaxation in various postures. We will integrate practices to address incontinence, prolapse, hypotonicity and hypertonicity. All women ages 18 – 99 are encouraged to come, yoga beginners are welcome. Our yoga practice will promote pelvic floor and core strength, flexibility, suppleness, and pelvic health. Included in the workshops is a detailed booklet with photos and descriptions of the poses.

About Marlene McGrath
Marlene McGrath has been a serious student of yoga for over 25 years and has been teaching yoga classes since 1997. In addition to a yoga teacher apprenticeship, she completed training in prenatal and postnatal yoga instruction in Seattle in 2001. She maintains her own yoga practice and regular study with senior yoga instructors in the Iyengar tradition. She has seen yoga influence her students over the last 18 years, and she continues to refine her instruction to best meet the individual needs of each student. She teaches gentle and prenatal specialty classes, as well as classes for beginning and continuing yoga students. Marlene’s own study and practice of yoga during her life changes over the last 20 years including her three pregnancies, births, and postpartum periods has significantly informed her teaching, as has her work teaching and learning from the hundreds of pregnant women and other long term students she has taught. She desires to empower students with understanding of their own bodies and to embrace the changes that come at all ages.

She has taught yoga for the University of Michigan Health System’s MFit Program and for the U-M Depression Center, for the Lamaze Association, and for the St. Joseph Hospital Women’s Health Center. Marlene was also a co-investigator/yoga teacher for a University of Michigan pilot study seeking to study mindfulness yoga as a supportive intervention for pregnant woman at risk for depression and anxiety (news article | technical publication). Marlene also has 10 years of experience as a clinical social worker in mental health settings. Currently, she teaches weekly yoga classes to students from ages 18 – 99 at Yoga Focus, She teaches periodic specialty workshops and classes such as: Yoga and Your Pelvic Floor, Prenatal Birth Partner Yoga, Yoga from Hands to Feet, Yoga for Hips and Low Back, , Yoga Posture Series for Women.
