Fire Destroys Portable Toilets at Park in Dexter

An investigation is underway into the fire that left a part of Community Park heavily damaged by fire.

The Sun Times News followed up with Dexter Area Fire Department Chief Doug Armstrong to ask about the fire that was reported just before 4 p.m. on Friday, June 7.

Armstrong said the “fire involved the portable toilets and the 12x12x12 fencing around the toilet area.”

“Our first unit arrived within six minutes and quickly extinguished the fire,” according to Armstrong.

He said the fire destroyed two portable toilets, the fencing around the toilets and the screening landscape bushes around the fence. Also, DTE was contacted since an electrical transformer was very close to the burning fence and the paint was scorched.

Armstrong said “There was a fireworks package found on the ground next to the portable toilets,” but no cause has been identified and there is an ongoing investigation by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

No injuries were reported and Armstrong said all units were clear of the scene within 40 minutes.
