The Dexter Community Orchestra moves from Sunday to Saturday night for its spring concert, “Dreams and Pictures”, featuring the winner of the DCO’s Youth Artist Competition, violinist Ella Saputra. The concert will bevat 7 p.m. Saturday, May 14 at Dexter High School’s Center for the Performing Arts.

Ms. Saputra, an 18-year-old high school student from Schaumburg, Illinois, will perform the first movement of William Walton’s Violin Concerto.

Music Director David Schultz has put together a family-friendly program, based on musical representations of dreams and artwork. It includes “House of Fountains”, a dream-inspired piece by Ann Arbor native Stephanie Ann Boyd (which she describes as “an art gallery of melody”), and Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”, a memorial tribute to the composer’s friend, artist Viktor Hartmann.

Opening the program will be “Melody” by Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk, a short, elegiac tribute to his native country. It complements the last of Mussorgsky’s musical pictures, “The Great Gate of Kyiv”.

The Saturday evening concert offers families an opportunity to experience some great music, and still get home by a reasonable hour. Dexter Community Orchestra concerts are free to the public, with no ticket required. Donations to help support the orchestra’s operating costs
