Chelsea’s Munson Fourth at D2 Wrestling State Finals

Chelsea’s Cole Munson was behind the eight ball from the start but battled back and earned a fourth-place finish at the Division 2 wrestling state finals in Grand Rapids Friday.

Munson was the district champion but was upset twice at last week’s Regional and came into the finals seeded fourth in his bracket meaning he would face a number-one seed to start the day.

He was pinned in the opening match against eventual state champion Doak Dean of Lowell sending him to the consolation bracket where one more loss would end his day.

Munson bounced back with a 15-0 tech-fall and a pin at 1:22 of the first round to advance to the fourth round of the Finals.

He then beat a number-one seed Preston Thompson of Riverview to advance to the consolation quarterfinals.

Munson then beat another number-one seed with an overtime pin of AJ Martel of Mason to move on to the consolation final and wrestle for third place.

Fatigue showed on Munson in the consolation finals. It was his sixth match of the day and third in under two-hours as the MHSAA made the tournament a one-day event instead of a two-day tournament as in past years due to the covid pandemic.

Munson would fall 3-1 in the consolation finals and finished in fourth place at 160 pounds and a spot on the medal stand with an All-State finish.

He finished the season with a 25-4 record.

Nolan Sinkwitts also took part in the D2 state finals.

Sinkwitts fell in his 171-pound opener by pin to eventual state champion Jacob Lee of Lowell.

We would get a bye in his second match of the day but fell 12-1 in his third match to end his season.

Sinkwitts would finish with a 14-8 record on the season.
