Incident #: 21-579

Location: 500 block of Lane Street

Date: April 10, 2021

Time: 10:07 am

INFORMATION: While at the station the complainant called the Chelsea Police Department to report a fraud that he had been a victim of. The complainant stated that on approximately March 17, 2021, he had received a telephone call from a person representing himself to be from “Dish TV”. The suspect stated that he was calling because his current equipment was believed to be old and outdated and he would need to be sent new equipment to prevent him from losing his service. The suspect advised him that he needed to send a check for the cost of the equipment and when the check was received, he would send the equipment to his house. After speaking with the suspect for an extended amount of time the complainant complied and sent the check to the suspect.

Approximately three weeks later the complainant still had not received his new equipment and received another phone call from the suspect who stated that the first check was damaged upon receipt so he needed to send another check. At the time the complainant complied and sent the check however shortly thereafter he became suspicious and determined that the original check had in fact been cashed. The complainant contacted his bank and was able to cancel the second check before it could be cashed. The case was turned over to the investigator for further investigation.
