Chelsea Baseball Clipped by Top-Ranked St. Mary's

The Chelsea baseball team gave top-ranked Orchard Lake St. Mary's all it could handle Friday, but came up just short in a 5-3 loss to the Eaglets.

OLSM is the defending Division 2 state champions after winning the title in 2019 and is loaded with several Division 1 baseball recruits, including shortstop Alex Mooney who many think will go in the first round of the MLB draft.

The Bulldogs outhit OLSM 8-6 in the contest, but St. Mary's made its hits count the most.

The teams were scoreless after three when a walk and three straight singles plated a run for OLSM in the fourth.

The Eaglets capitalized on Bulldogs mistakes in the fourth to score three runs to take a 4-0 lead. A hit batter, a walk and error and a passed ball helped OLSM in the inning and they made the Bulldogs pay.

Chelsea battled back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to cut the lead to 4-3.

Jacob Schultz was hit by a pitch and Will Wilhelm followed with a single. An error by the OLSM pitcher scored Schultz and Joe Taylor drove in a run with a single to cut the lead to 4-2. Hunter Sciackitano drove in a run with a groundout to make it 4-3 after five innings.

Chelsea would put two runners on in the sixth but could not get the big hit and the Eaglets would get an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make the final 5-3.

Sciackitano led the Bulldogs offense with two hits and an RBI, while Taylor had a hit and RBI. Schultz and Wilhelm each had a hit and run scored, while Trent Hill, Dylan Dollinger, and Brendon Westcott each added hits for Chelsea.

Hunter Shaw took the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs allowing five hits and three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Chelsea fell to 5-1 overall on the season and will travel to Adrian for a SEC White doubleheader Monday.
