Chelsea Baseball Splits With DeWitt
The Chelsea baseball team continued to show that it can compete with some of the top teams in the state as the Bulldogs earned a split with previously undefeated DeWitt Wednesday.
DeWitt entered the doubleheader with a 14-0 record and the Bulldogs handed the Panthers their first loss of the season 7-5 in the opener.
Chelsea took a 1-0 lead in the first, but DeWitt would take a 3-1 lead in the third.
The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the bottom of the third with a two-run double by Chase Kemp to tie the game. Kemp would score on an error by the DeWitt right fielded to give the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead.
Chelsea extended the lead to 6-3 in the fourth with Logan Kilgore driving in a run with a single.
DeWitt cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth, but Chelsea added a run with a sacrifice fly by Brendan Westcott for a 7-4 lead.
The Panthers got one back in the sixth to make it 7-5 and would put one on in the seventh, but Hunter Shaw shut DeWitt done to end the game.
Shaw earned the win on the mound striking out four and allowing five hits. All five runs scored on Shaw were unearned due to seven Chelsea errors.
Kilgore and Hunter Sciackitano collected two hits each to lead the Bulldogs. Kemp had a double and two RBI, Joe Taylor a hit and RBI, Jacob Schultz and Hunter Ferry a hit and run scored each and Trent Hill one hit for Chelsea.
Chelsea took a 5-4 lead in the fifth of the nightcap, but DeWitt scored three times in the sixth to take a 7-5 win.
Sciackitano led the offense with two hits and three RBI, while Lucas Dunn had two hits and scored two runs. Hill and Lucas Dawson collected two hits each, Taylor a hit and run scored and Westcott one hit.
Dawson took the loss on the mound, striking out four.
Chelsea improved to 10-3 overall. They host Fowlerville in a doubleheader Friday at 4:00 PM.
