Chelsea Lacrosse Falls to Bedford in Overtime (With Photos)
The Chelsea lacrosse team staged a ferocious rally in regulation against Bedford Thursday night, but dropped a heartbreaker to the Kicking Mules 12-11 in overtime.
The Bulldogs fell behind 6-3 at halftime and Bedford scored early in the third to take a four goal lead 7-3 and looked to be cruising, but Chelsea would rally.
Liam Conti, Mitch Sumner, and Tyler Wallgren scored for the Bulldogs in the third to cut the to 7-6, but Bedford answered with a late goal to take an 8-6 lead after three periods.
Chelsea battled all the way back with goals by Logan Vaughn and Cam Weatherwax early in the fourth to tie the game at 8-8 and the game went back and forth from there.
Vaughn scored on a wrap around to put Chelsea on top 9-8 for the Bulldogs first lead of the game with 7:27 left.
Bedford scored two straight to take a 10-9 lead, but Sumner rifled a shot in to tie it at 10.
The Mules retook the lead 11-10 with 1L49 left, but was called for a penalty to give Chelsea a man-up just a few seconds later. The Bulldogs took advantage and Conti found the net to tie the game at 11 with 1:30 left.
Bedford had one final shot in regulation but Harrison Lantis made a huge save in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.
Chelsea was called for holding the stick on the opening faceoff of overtime giving the Mules possession and Bedford capitalized by scoring 32 seconds into the overtime period for the game-winner.
Sumner led Chelsea with a hat trick of three goals. Weatherwax, Wallgren, Conti, and Vaughn scored two goals each for the Bulldogs.
Chelsea fell to 1-3 overall on the season.
