This post expresses the views and opinions of the author(s) and not necessarily that of The Sun Times News management or staff.

The purpose of this work session is to give each City Board and Committee an opportunity to provide an update on their current projects and activities. I have provided a brief description of each board/subcommittee and a link to its respective webpage. If you’re interested in learning more about the boards and committees whose work is often the basis for Council action, please consider attending this meeting.

In addition to serving on Council, I have been appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Zoning Ordinance Update Sub-Committee. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about these or any of the other committees.

If you are not able to attend the meeting, know that Council recently directed staff to make the video recordings of these public meetings available on the City’s website. Until City staff does so, you can visit this citizen-managed YouTube page to which some videos have been uploaded. If you’re interested in watching the discussion of a specific topic, please let me know and I will do my best to find the relevant video excerpt.

  • Welcoming Remarks
  • Non-Arranged Participation
  • Boards and Committees Discussion
    • Arts, Culture, and Heritage Committee
      • The Arts, Culture & Heritage Committee was established by Council Resolution in 2008. They advise the City Council on the development of arts, culture and heritage, promote and publicize projects, serve as advocates, and encourage public awareness, networking and collaboration.
    • Downtown Development Authority
      • The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is responsible for economic development and related projects within the designated downtown district. The DDA is authorized by statute and the City Council to capture property taxes within its district for use on these projects. Appointed by Council, the DDA elects their own chair, vice-chair, secretary, and treasurer. The Mayor also serves on the DDA, and he is assisted by the Community Development Manager.
    • Parks and Recreation Commission
      • The Parks & Recreation Commission oversees the planning and development of the City's parks. They are appointed by the City Council as an advisory board.
    • Planning Commission
      • The Planning Commission is responsible for advising the City Council with regard to the proper development of the City of Dexter. They are also responsible for the Capital Improvement Plan. The Commission has nine members appointed by the City Council upon the recommendation of the Mayor.
    • Zoning Board of Appeals
      • The Zoning Board of Appeals is governed by the City's Zoning Ordinance, and it meets as needed. The Board hears appeals for variances to the Zoning Ordinance.
    • Zoning Ordinance Update Sub-Committee
      • The City of Dexter has begun an update of the City’s Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Control Ordinance, led by a sub-committee of elected and appointed City officials with support from City planning staff and consultants. The Zoning Ordinance is the local law regulating the location and size of buildings, what “uses” (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial) can happen where, sign location and size, and the landscaping, parking and environmental protections needed with new building and redevelopment. The Subdivision Control Ordinance mandates the design and layout of streets, landscaping, and property lines for future residential, commercial, and industrial subdivisions.
