Dexter Water Polo Opens with Win Over Groves
The Dexter boys' water polo team opens the 2021 season with high expectations after a 2020 season that saw the Dreadnaughts earn a state runner-up finish.
The Dreadnaughts started slow in their season opener Tuesday night, but pulled away with a big second half to defeat Birmingham Groves 11-5.
Ben Duncan put the Dreads on top with a goal with 26 seconds left in the first period for a 1-0 Dexter lead.
Groves would score four goals in the second, but a pair of goals by Tristan Lorincz and one by Joe Sharon would tie the game at 4-4 at the break.
Dexter clamped down on the defensive end in the third by holding Groves scoreless.
Clayton Kinnard scored a pair of goals in the third, while Leo Varitek scored one as Dexter opened up a 7-4 lead after three.
Varitek put the game away with a pair of fourth period goals and Lorincz added his third of the game in the in the fourth for the Dreadnaughts.
Dexter will host fourth-ranked Ann Arbor Pioneer Friday night in its home opener.
