A familiar sight on Baker Road near Dexter is now gone.

The statue named La Raza was removed on April 12, leaving behind an empty space where there used to be a piece of art that probably started many conversations over the years inside cars passing by.

In a post on April 12 to the Facebook page-Friends of Dexter- Jarrad Lawlor of Mager Scientific announced:

Dear Dexter Community,

“The People” statue has been standing alongside Baker Road since 1991, but over the last few years it has started to deteriorate. A month ago, I obtained and accepted a proposal to remove the statue, and today is the day of removal. There are no current plans to replace the installment.

R. Farrington Sharp, a prolific and award-winning artist, created the statue and named it “La Raza”. Sharp had a studio in the space previously occupied by Red Brick in the late 80s/early 90s, and the statue was located behind the building. In 1991, Mager Scientific purchased the statue and had it installed in its current location.

Included below are several photographs of when it was originally put in place at Mager and its use as a fun community resource.

Regards,

Jarrad Lawlor
